Norwood Hill, Surrey

This brick-built bungalow had been constructed in the 1970s in the form of an American ranch. Two long rectangular wings are connected by a distinctive two-storey octagonal entrance tower, one wing containing the living accommodation and the other four bedrooms, a master en suite and a dressing room, together with a utility and WC. Set in 23 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside this uninspiring property had so much more potential.

The design solution involved covering brickwork in a grey render, and replacing the old roof concrete roof tiles with lighter, composite slate with an integrated photovoltaic system for generating electricity. The entrance porch was remodelled to create a much more welcoming entrance, windows and patio doors were replaced with an aluminium framed alternative.

Internally, the living wing has been entirely remodelled, with walls removed to create one large living and social space with easy access to the huge bespoke terrace. The hallway has been transformed with wide oak flooring, new doors, lighting and decor. I designed a new timber staircase which was constructed by the very resourceful contractor, Will Loch.

The large garage and pool house were visually separated from the man house so I connected the two areas with a continuous Brise Soleil and canopy which also provided much needed shade on this south facing elevation.

This property was featured in ‘Self Build & Design’ magazine.
