Modena Road, Hove

This is a lovely 30s house in a quiet residential road in Hove, East Sussex. One of the key issues the owner’s wanted addressing was the lack of natural light at the rear of the property where the kitchen and dining area are located. As the rear elevation faced east, direct sunlight would be lost by midday leaving the rooms very dark. My solution involved extending the rear and angling the ‘wall’ of glazing towards the south, thereby optimising natural light. The owners already owned an eclectic assortment of furniture, art and objects and they wanted an ‘industrial’ feel throughout their home to make the most of their choices. I specified a polished concrete floor for the main living space, exposed steel columns painted yellow and Crittall style door and panel between the hall and living space. The exterior has been rendered in a deep Charcoal finish with highlights of yellow picked out in the steelwork and aluminium fascia.
